What Does a Boot Scan Do?

Cyber threats can be disguised in a variety of ways. Many antivirus programs are able to detect malware with regular scans or real-time protection. However a boot time scan is more thorough and will detect threats that are hidden.

A boot scan checks the computer system at a very initial stage, before it begins the Windows operating system. This allows the software to identify malware that is hidden and eliminate it without disrupting your normal work. Avast’s boot scanner feature offers various options to deal with the threats discovered during the scan, such as mending the files immediately and moving them to the Disease Chest or quarantine, and then deleting them.

It can take a while to run a boot test. To speed things up it’s a good idea to disable non-essential startup applications and unplug external hard drives or USB devices. This will decrease the chance of conflict, and allow the scan only to focus on internal storage. It is also a good idea to dedicate some time during the day when you won’t be using the computer for other activities so that the boot process can run its course without interference.

To enable a boot-time scanner choose Settings (the gear icon) within the Avast interface. Select Protection > Scan settings and choose the option Boot-Time Scan. Configure the options according to your preferences, then click OK.
